What is virtual web hosting (virtual domains)?

We specialize in Virtual Web Hosting which means that you can find a home for your web site on our servers which establishes your own presence on the Internet.  We are what is called an Internet Presence Provider.  We also register and obtain your domain name from an affiliate dns registry and provide 24 hour access to upload material to your account on our servers.  This means you can have your own email at your own domain name instead of an email address of screen-name@aol.com for example.  You can switch ISP's all you want and keep your own domain email the same for as long as you have your domain name and account. What is a domain name registry?

Network Solutions is an independent organization responsible for holding the registration and routing of Internet domain names ending in .com, .org., and .net.  They allow other registry organizations to register domain names sharing this ability.  Our fee is $25.00 as opposed to many other registry services where payment of $35.00 or more is required.  Our charge of $25.00 per year for new domain name registrations now replaces any fees paid to Network Solutions before this shared registry system was in place.  [back to top]

Does Prentice Internet handle the dns registration/transfer process?

We are capable of registering new domain names immediately in real time provided the name is available.   If you are considering a new domain name please allow us to register it for you.   Registering with any other registration provider and then having us transfer the name will take much longer but is acceptable.   If you are transferring to us AND you or your prior host registered your name with Network Solutions, they will need your approval before the dns record can be updated.  They do this by sending a notice to the email they have on file for you when you first registered your name.  If you no longer have this email address it can greatly add to the time it takes for the transfer.  You may be required to call or fax them to handle the verification process.  We cannot do this for you since you own the domain name and we only rent you the space they will point your name to.   If you obtained your name from another registry we can provide you with the name server information you need for them to point your name to our network.   [back to top]

How long before my domain name is active in the web browser?

With new domain names it can be as soon as 24 hours.   Usually it's 24 to 48 hours.  With transfers it can be considerably longer especially if problems are encountered.  If you are transferring your name, you can upload your site and hold off approving the notice from Network Solutions or updating your dns with your original registry until you have finished.  You will suffer no down time using this method but do be aware it can take a few days for all ISP's to receive the updated information from the whois databases.  Some people could go to the old site while other's go to the new for up to 10 days.   [back to top]

Does Prentice Internet allow foreign domain names?

Absolutely!  Once your account has been setup we will provide you with the name server information your country's registry will need to point your domain name to our servers. [back to top]

Can I access my domain name without the "www" in front?

Yes, both ways work fine under our configuration.  [back to top]

Does Prentice Internet offer dial-up access?

No, currently we specialize in hosting only.  [back to top]

Can I use my account for commercial purposes?

Absolutely!  Isn't that what the Internet is all about?   As long as you use your space for lawful purposes only, commercial use is allowed.

How long does it take to setup my account?

Expect to hear back from a billing representative with your account information within 12 to 24 hours. [back to top]

Can I securely accept credit card information through my web site?

Yes, we provide free access to our secure server.  With our secure server you can securely accept credit card information. [back to top]

Can I register additional domains pointed to a subdirectory in my main account?

No, each domain or sub-domain receives it's own unique IP number and not virtual IP's that can easily become misconfigured. [back to top]

Does Prentice Internet also design web pages?

Prentice Internet does not offer web designing services as our service is geared to those with this knowledge already and is offered self service.   However, we do have several relationships with web page designers and consultants.   We would be happy to put you in contact with one of our recommended designers.

Does Prentice Internet allow third level domains; i.e., myname.mydomain.com?

Yes, these names are charged the same as a regular account as they receive all the same features.  The only difference is there would be no additional dns registration fees with 3rd level domain names. [back to top]
